Survey: Mental Health partnership coming to CLGW

Two out three Ontarians feel that COVID-19 has lasting and serious mental health impacts.

CLGW is teaming up with Andrea Groenewald and Linda Gould from Five Star Relationships,  as well as Cathy Kuehni, Trauma, Grief and Loss Consultant, to provide mental health supports for our employees, the people we support and their families and caregivers. This team will be supported by our Behavioural Therapy team of Claire Jenkins M.Ed. (ABA, OCT, RBT) and Mirjana Vujosevic.

This mental health initiative will include various supports, including counselling, coaching, mental health talks, emotional regulation, behavioural strategies, and more.

To help us tailor the mental health talks, we are asking you to participate in this short survey.

We want to hear from you! We want to tailor these Mental Health initiatives to what you are seeing and experiencing so you get the most out of these supports.

To participate in the survey, please go to: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/mentalhealththemes

Please complete by June 3, 2021. The survey is best accessed on a desktop, laptop or tablet.

BONUS! Feeling creative? We’re looking for help naming this mental health initiative!

Visit the survey link above, complete the questions, and you will be given a link to submit a name idea. Name ideas will be capped at 50 submissions, or on June 3, 2021.

Name ideas will then be sent out for a vote.

The person who submitted the most popular name will receive a $50 Amazon Gift Card.

Please only one name idea per person. Should more than one person have the same great name idea, the person who submitted the name idea earliest will be eligible for prizing. If one person submits more than one name idea, their earliest submission will be eligible.

If you have any questions about the mental health initiative, please connect with Mel Darke at melaniedarke@clgw.ca

Thank you for your participation and for helping us to understand how we can tailor our mental health talks. Your feedback will be included, and the overall trends will help us prioritize how we focus these talks.

Please share this information with any of the people we support, their families and caregivers, as well as consider printing and posting it to your worksite for employees who are not regularly monitoring email. We have sent this out through our COVID update email list, but it never hurts to make sure someone has received the opportunity to participate.

Town Halls fast approaching

This post was also emailed to all @clgw.ca email accounts to join in!

Let’s come together over Zoom! There’s been a lot going on these past few months, and with the pandemic, we haven’t been afforded the opportunity to meet face to face. It might be one of my favourite parts of my role – being able to sit, listen, and talk with people about the work we do.

So let’s get the ball rolling, virtually, and hopefully we’ll be meeting face to face real soon!

These town halls will include:

  • A little intro from me
  • A pandemic update (including having pre-submitted questions answered by WDGPH)
  • A Services and Organizational update
  • And Special Guest: People4People, giving us an update about their 2021 aspirations
  • A short Q&A period at the end

How a little dreaming can change everything – A Day Services and Residential Support Story

Written by Laura Kirk, with collaboration from Paul Smook, Sarah Crawford and Jessica Martin

“I feel lonely. Nobody talks to me. I don’t want to go to ARC anymore.”

When these words were spoken by a person supported about a year ago, staff listened. We visited him at ARC a few times to see how he was spending his days and to better understand what was engaging him. The truth of the matter is, Paul was not happy there anymore.

He was imagining a life outside the building that was once an integral part of his daily routine, but over the course of a several months had become less and less important to him. Paul needed a change. Slowly, Paul began asking if he could just “stay home to relax” and we begun reducing the hours he spent at ARC.

Public Health Ontario – Cohorting Webinar

We are inviting staff to watch PHO’s Cohorting During a COVID-19 Outbreak in a Congregate Living Setting.

Supervisors will be including this in their team meetings. However, we know that not everyone can attend a team meeting, and this information will be very helpful to understand.

*Note: we have tested this webinar in other internet browsers, and it sometimes does not work. We have confirmed it does work in Edge.

Outdoor Exploring – a Passport Story

Nature Walk

Written by Randy, with support from his Direct Support Professional Ashlyn Northfield

Randy loves rock and roll and exploring the outdoors. Randy receives passport funding and currently uses CLGW to help support him in his adventures.

Due to COVID-19, Randy feels safer exploring his local community outdoors. This has allowed Randy to get in touch with his “nature” side and reconnect with activities that he had once enjoyed, like geocaching. Randy has been able to use his past experience to teach geocaching to his passport DSP, inspiring her to explore nature and connect with the amazing local opportunities.

Randy would like to continue using his passport funding to explore the many great outdoor spaces that Wellington County has to offer to build on his social skills and knowledge of nature around him.

Randy has been able to learn the importance of knowledge sharing and hopes to educate more people about the cool things in nature and all the opportunity that lies within this great community.

“Keep it rocked, keep it locked. Be safe, enjoy life and explore your local community” – Randy

Love for Animals – a Passport Story

Mapleton’s Organic Farm

Penny Ross is a resident of Mount Forest living at one of Community Living Guelph Wellington’s residential homes who receives passport funding. Penny loves animals and due to COVID-19, has not been able to connect with that aspect of her life.

While out at Mapleton’s Organics with her Passport DSP, Penny got to visit with a donkey, a pig, a horse, cows, chickens, dogs, and cats! Penny had a blast and said that she would like to work with animals.

Penny is exploring the possibility of paid work like dog walking where she can make her own schedule and work with dogs best suited for her. Penny would also like to volunteer her time at the SPCA once it re-opens again.

Passport funding is providing Penny an opportunity to do meaningful things within her community and explore her interests and passions.

“I like my passport worker, we have many laughs and giggles. I really need that during this difficult time (sickness) and I appreciate the opportunity to visit/work with animals. I am hoping to work with animals within my community and passports will be able to help me with that” – Penny Ross
